Within the significant trade region of the Arabian peninsula, a new monotheistic religion forms. The rapidly expanding Islamic Caliphate and subsequent Muslim empires will have a major global impact on the history and achievements in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. THE ORIGINS OF ISLAM -- UNIT 7.1 Summary: The revelations of Muhammad form the basis of Islam, a rapidly spreading monotheistic religion from the Arabian peninsula. THE UMAYYAD DYNASTY -- UNIT 7.2 Summary: In the first few centuries after Muhammad’s death, Muslim rule expanded rapidly, overcoming geographic barriers, all whilst a religious schism threatened to divide the caliphate. THE ABBASID DYNASTY -- UNIT 7.3 Summary: The golden age of the Islamic civilization was housed in the former glories of Mesopotamia and Persia, but was short-lived before the invasion of Central Asian nomadic warriors. ISLAMIC ACHIEVEMENTS-- UNIT 7.4 Summary: The early Islamic civilization was characterized by achievements in science and the arts that transformed the Islamic world and had a major global impact. The student will investigate the origins of Islam, its impact on southwest Asia, north Africa, and parts of Europe, and the cultural achievements of the Muslim World. TOPIC 1 The Origins of Islam
