The Byzantine Empire will continue many of the political components of the Roman Empire, but Christianity becomes the dominant (if not the only) institution in Europe in the centuries that follow. THE BYZANTINE EMPIRE -- UNIT 6.1 Summary: After Rome falls to the corruption and invasion, its legacy continues in the eastern half of the empire as the Byzantine Empire. THE KIEVAN RUS -- UNIT 6.2 Summary: A small group of eastern Europeans begin to dominate trade between the Baltic and Black Seas, which draws that attention of many invading groups. CHRISTENDOM -- UNIT 6.3 Summary: Western Europe is left decentralized and relatively uncivilized after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, with Christianity as the only major unifying force.
